The secret to hemp industry success: Scale

“Scalable agriculture will help (everyone’s) price points. It will help the entire industry. This isn’t just about the CBD, this has to be about hemp. It’s about the whole plant.”

Josh Hendrix, CV Sciences

Part 1: The business of hemp

  • The 2014 Farm Bill contained revolutionary provisions for hemp research in states with hemp laws in place.

  • “Hemp is cannabis with less the 0.3 percent THC, which is basically a CBD hemp.”

  • The goal is to certify the seed and provide more jobs.

Part 2: The power of research

  • The University of Kentucky conducted research on 24 varieties of certified hemp seeds from around the world, and only three of them were verified.

  • The success of the hemp industry is all about scale, creating income streams and using the whole plant.

  • The U.S. needs to be considerably more competitive in the world market.

  • We need to figure out how to harvest the plant in a way that maximizes total yield—fiber, food and CBD.

Part 3: Traceability

  • What do buyers need to ask to ensure they are getting a quality product?

  • Third-party verification is a must for quality control and maintaining standards.

  • It needs to be sustainable and stabilized, and we need to start using certified seeds.

  • If you’re not asking questions, you’re not doing your job as a buyer.
