Back to school is just around the corner and that means lunch-packing season is almost upon us. For those of us with kids on the younger side, packing appetizing and healthy lunches that actually get eaten can be challenging. We like what four healthy-snack manufacturers have done to fuel lunch makers with inspiration. The folks at Annie’s Homegrown, Honest Kids, Organic Valley and Stonyfield Farm created the Rock the Lunch Box website.
Here, you’ll find a variety of tools to provide ideas for healthy lunch making. The almost 200 easy-to-navigate photos of lunches and snacks are great for creativity. Try looking at them with your children and picking out what looks good to both of you. We like personal touches such as the sandwich cut into a star, with the Post-it note Mom put in the lunchbox reading, “You are a rock star.” The DIY Yogurt Parfait is a sure hit with most kid, and rice-paper wraps are perfect for lunches!
You can sort through the images with filters such as vegetarian, gluten-free and nut-free. Some of the images are heavy on the sponsors’ products, but many don’t even include them. Anyone can submit an image, so expect the selection to expand. Consider creating a healthy lunch with your child and snapping a photo to upload yourself.
The site also features videos from parents with tips on packing a healthy lunch. The video on tips for keeping items cold is particularly useful.
