Palm industry responds to viral orangutan ad about deforestation

The ad, which was taken off the air on British television for being too political, has provoked a defensive response from the palm oil industry. CEO of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Darrel Webber released a statement arguing that boycotting palm oil “doesn’t stop the destruction of rainforests” and that companies and consumers “should instead work with the industry to ensure there are sustainable standards for any of the oils and fats it consumes.” Read more at SF Gate 


Whole Foods CEO John Mackey on his cookbook, lower prices and higher purpose

Mackey’s cookbook companion to his “manifesto” of sorts, The Whole Foods Diet, is now available for purchase. Africa’s agtech wave gets $10 million richer as Twiga Foods raises more capital

The startup aims to improve the supply chain from farmers to markets and has reduced typical post-harvest losses in Kenya from 30 percent to 4 percent for produce that is brought to market on the Twiga network. Deadly salmonella outbreak forces USDA to recall raw turkey

Just in time for Thanksgiving, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection service has recalled 91,338 pounds of raw ground turkey products after 164 illnesses, 63 hospitalizations and one death across the U.S. Lab tests showed that the salmonella was present in products such as ground turkey and turkey patties, as well as some pet food products. Read more at CNN …
