Cold food, hot air

Supermarkets are some of the biggest commercial building electricity users—and on average, more than half of their energy  bills are spent on cooling people and food. So it makes sense that the EPA is making a push to convince grocery stores to fix their leaky air conditioning and refrigeration systems that are destroying the ozone layer, and make refrigeration more efficient so it’s less harmful to the climate. It started with the GreenChill Partnership, which was started to find companies with creative ways of preventing leaks so they could help other supermarkets. But the industry has been slow to adopt new systems with the ability to reduce climate footprint. In 2015, an environmental nonprofit called the North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council formed to encourage utilities to incentivize use of natural refrigerants for customers.
