Newman's Own Organics and Paul Newman Charitable Giving donated $200,000 to the Organic Farming Research Foundation. According to Bob Scowcroft, OFRF's executive director, this is the largest single contribution ever received by the nonprofit organization, which supports organic farming research and education projects.

Nutrition Business Journal announced the winners of its 2005 product merit awards: Alpine Pure; American BioSciences Inc.; BioLogic Health Solutions; DMV International; Embria Health Sciences; Guayaki Sustainable Rainforest Products; Hero Nutritional Products; Jarrow Formulas; Naturally ME Inc.; OrderDog Inc.; Peeled Snacks; Pharmanex; Pharmavite; Renaissance Herbs Inc.; Sabinsa Corp.; and SimplyH Inc. NBJ also announced the winners of its environment and sustainability awards: Choice Organic Teas, ForesTrade and Organic India. Organics Unlimited and Vitamin Angel Alliance won NBJ's social responsibility awards.

  • The five-week tour visited more than 90 locations and introduced approximately 17,500 health-conscious consumers to new organic, natural and healthy products.

    GrandyOats of Brownfield, Maine, donated its granola products to the American Hiking Society's "Hike the Hill" Trails Advocacy Week conference in Washington, D.C., in February.

    Kettle Foods, a Salem, Ore.,-based natural potato chip manufacturer, plans to build a 70,000 square foot manufacturing space in Beloit, Wis. The plant, which is the company's second, will create at least 100 jobs and is projected to have an economic impact of $18 million.

    Indianapolis-based Endangered Species Chocolate will give 5 percent of its profits to Chimp Haven Inc. and 5 percent to the National Wildlife Federation. ESC also has given a special donation to two Nigerian farming villages that supply the company with cacao.

    Toronto-based Ruth's Hemp Foods expanded distribution through Rainbow Natural Foods, a division of United Natural Foods. RHF now has access to more than 1,200 natural food retailers in the central United States.
