Naturally Boulder a hit
The second annual Naturally Boulder Day entrepreneurs' conference, held Oct. 20 in Boulder, Colo., had 360 people in attendance, more than double the number of attendees from last year. "Naturally Boulder is a unique public-private economic development initiative supported by the city of Boulder and promoting the growth of natural and organic products in the Boulder region. The annual Naturally Boulder conference provides a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs to learn how to build sales, interact with peers and gain access to successful industry veterans who serve as teachers and mentors. By drawing from the region and country the conference also puts Boulder squarely on the map as the gateway to the natural products industry," said conference director and Naturally Boulder board member Steve Hoffman, whose company, Compass Natural, produced the event.
Von Eschenbach confirmed as U.S. FDA Commissioner
On Dec. 7, one day before Congress adjourned, the U.S. Senate confirmed Andrew von Eschenbach as the head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in an 80-11 vote. Von Eschenbach, 65, had held the commissioner's job on a temporary basis since September 2005. President George W. Bush nominated von Eschenbach, a urologist who previously headed the National Cancer Institute, in March 2006. The FDA had been without a permanent leader since the resignation of Lester Crawford in September 2005, two months after he was confirmed, and in the last five years the post has been vacant all but 18 months.
