The Wednesday evening Southern California Institute of Food Technologists trade show offered another layer to Natural Products Expo West, as companies looking to get into more mainstream functional foods gathered en masse to showcase their wares.
“Our ingredient applies to dietary supplements and functional foods. This SCIFTS show gives us an audience with more of the food companies,” said Paul Willis, president of selenium supplier Cypress Systems.
The SCIFTS chapter is the largest regional gathering in the country. Dozens of rows in two ballrooms filled out the second floor of the Anaheim Hilton. The festive gathering of tabletops was as much a cocktail hour of colleagues (cash bar was doing a brisk business on the show floor) as it was a business gathering of suppliers and finished-goods manufacturers.
It also offered an interesting counterpoint to the strictly natural nature of Expo West and Supply Expo. While suppliers like OSF Flavors offered trendy flavor formulations such as natural and organic pomegranate/lemonade and pomegranate/cherry, it also has on tap a suite of artificial flavorings.
