The Republic of Tea

The Republic of Tea was founded in 1992 in an effort to bring premium teas sourced ethically from all around the world into consumers' mugs. Since then, the company has worked extensively with nonprofits both stateside and abroad as part of its philanthropy efforts. Read on to find out about the products, certifications and ingredients that delight its loyal customers, or "citizens," the most.

What has been The Republic of Tea’s approach in terms of incorporating social and environmental missions into its business model?

The Republic of Tea adopted our charter nearly three decades ago to guide us toward enriching people’s lives with the experience of tea. In the charter we commit to being mindful of the impact our actions and activities have on our communities and environment and to conscientiously act in a long-term and responsible manner. The Republic of Tea embodies the philosophy of Tashun, or "great harmony"–when people naturally care about the world and depend on each other for the wellbeing of the whole. These guiding principles are frequently consulted as we make important decisions, especially those that have social and environmental impacts.

Can you expand on the importance of being a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership?

The Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) unites member tea companies in a noncommercial alliance with the mission of preserving and improving our precious supply chain globally. Members of the Ethical Tea Partnership care for the livelihoods of tea workers at the countries of origin by building programs and working on policies for their benefit. As a long-time member of the Ethical Tea Partnership and the first North American company to join, The Republic of Tea prioritizes the work of the ETP as part of our social responsibility.

How have consumers responded to The Republic of Tea’s mission-driven certifications (e.g., Elephant Friendly, Fair Trade)?

Citizens (customers) of The Republic of Tea value the discovery of our innovative, delicious teas and herbs while appreciating the virtues The Republic of Tea stands for. Sourcing teas and herbs, like the new Certified Elephant Friendly teas from the Assam region of India or procuring a Biodynamic Certified chamomile from Italy, is part of what we do to enrich and delight our customers, the citizens.

Mission is more important than ever to today’s consumers. How does The Republic of Tea spark change?

The Republic of Tea began in 1992 as a mission-driven business and as the company continues to grow, so do its responsibilities and commitments to sustainability. The Republic of Tea supports organizations like the Climate Collaborative and the Upcycled Food Association to perpetuate change. Ministers (employees) at The Republic of Tea created an Impact TEAm that meets frequently to further initiatives like energy efficiency and waste reduction. Staying innovative, passionate, persistent and resourceful sparks change.
