NEXT Trends 2020 series: In an effort to help support retailers and brands, we will be publishing regular brand features for the next few weeks. Brands are selected from those that registered to exhibit at Natural Products Expo West 2020 and were curated as great examples of one of 50 trends New Hope Network is monitoring in the marketplace.

These trends are part of New Hope Network's NEXT Expo Guidebook and trend hierarchy.

Today, we look at five companies that are innovating in the "Evaluating Trade-Offs" trend within the Material Optimization macro force. A single holy-grail solution to social and environmental externalities doesn’t exist. It’s easy to get misdirected down one pathway thinking all problems are solved, but the reality is that every decision made has potential unforeseen impacts. Brands are becoming more aware of this and embracing systems thinking to better account for which decision has what unforeseen impact.

GoSili, BioKleen, The Humble Co.

1. GoSili

What is it? GoSili creates silicone products like reusable straws and cups. GoSili's products are made from platinum silicone, which is reusable, durable and safe.

Innovation: GoSili products are made 100% plastic free with just two materials: European-grade silicone and microwaveable stainless steel. GoSIli silicone contains zero petroleum products, and can be recycled.

2. BioKleen

What is it? Non-toxic home cleaning products.

Innovation: BioKleen makes enzyme-derived cleaning products from plants and minerals that avoid common toxins. It uses concentrated formulas and energy-conscious cold water production, and supports reforestation and other conservation efforts.

3. The Humble Co.

What is it? The Humble Co. makes eco-friendly oral care products that are developed by dentists and designed in Sweden.

Innovation: Eco-friendly products include toothpaste tablets and chewing gum. The Humble Co.’s gum is made from the Sapodilla tree.

TwentyFifty, Caboo

4. TwentyFifty

What is it? The world's first 100% compostable cutlery solution made entirely of natural grains.

Innovation: TwentyFifty creates biodegradable, compostable, essentially edible utensils. These compostable spoons and forks are made of natural grains and water.

5. Caboo

What is it? Caboo offers commercial and household paper products made from renewable, fast-growing bamboo and sugarcane.

Innovation: Global toilet paper use takes 27,000 trees a day out of the ecosystem. Replacing each tree takes decades. Bamboo and sugarcane are sustainable alternatives to using trees to make paper.
