When Ronald Reagan was president 30 years ago, natural and organic products were sold mostly by independent and co-op retailers, and the size of the industry was estimated at $2.4 billion. Today, natural and organic products are sold in almost every retail channel, and the industry is worth nearly $68 billion, according to Natural Foods Merchandiser’s “2009 Market Overview.” In three decades, one constant for the industry that has grown from fringe to mainstream has been Natural Products Expo West, which celebrates its 30th anniversary March 11-14, 2010, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.
“The original Natural Products Expo in California was a catalyst, as it brought natural and organic retailers and vendors all together for the first time,” said Michael Besancon, global senior vice president at Whole Foods Market. “Having attended the show thirty years ago, I believe it marked the transition of the natural and organic products business from a movement to an industry.”
This year the event will host over 1,700 exhibiting companies showcasing products in the categories of natural and specialty foods, organic, supplements, health and beauty, natural living and pet products and will feature forward-thinking environmentalist, author and founder of 350.org Bill McKibben and Robert Kenner, director of the film Food, Inc.
In keeping with McKibben’s vision for reducing our overall CO2 emissions annually, New Hope Natural Media, producers of Natural Products Expo West, will continue to reduce the show’s carbon imprint by providing, for the first time, a Show Directory Map instead of a printed Buyers’ Guide, an initiative that will conserve more than seven million sheets of paper (the equivalent of 840 trees). In addition the producers of Expo West will provide an energy offset program for the venue and travel and host a paperless press room. In 2009 Trade Show Executive named Natural Products Expo West as "The Leader in Green Initiatives" for the second year running.
