The Federal Drug Administration does not currently regulate the term "organic" when it comes to cosmetics, body care and personal care products. As you might imagine, this has made things especially confusing for consumers accustomed to choosing all-organic food and beverage products, and who would like to extend the same consideration to their toothpaste, shampoo and lotions.
It doesn't help that the USDA Organic program is geared primarily toward food and beverage products, which is why so few brands in the natural beauty space boast the certification; a cosmetic, body care product or personal care product must be made up of agricultural ingredients that can meet the USDA/National Organic Program production, handling, processing and labeling standards to be eligible for certification under NOP regulations.
This process can take anywhere between three to six months and must be fully completed before a natural brand's products can be marketed as certified organic.
So, with all that said, let's take some time to celebrate five natural beauty brands that are helping improve soil conditions, preserve farmworkers' health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by selling USDA Certified Organic personal care products.
