Call to arms
"Our industry has long supported efforts to remove the relatively few bad actors who market adulterated products. ... What we cannot support is wholesale changes to a regulatory structure that is working, and could work better if the measures we have supported were adopted. A series of new laws for criminals to ignore is not the answer."
—John Gay, executive director/CEO, Natural Products Association
Food for thought
"Think about the diagnosis of depression. When does someone have a clinical syndrome vs a mood fluctuation? At what point should it be regarded as a condition that needs treatment? When you talk about food habits, it becomes extraordinarily complicated because everybody has a relationship with food, and it's usually a somewhat complicated one."
—Dr Craig Johnson, director of the eating disorders programme at Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Nutritionist, feed thyself
"The teachers said they were embarrassed. They were teaching about nutrition in their classrooms and then the kids were going into the lunch room and saying, 'Why are you serving me this?'"
—Kirsten Tobey, cofounder of Revolution Foods, a firm that helps schools improve their lunches
