Raw-milk dairy gets FDA warning

They told us this was coming. Officials at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent a warning letter to Organic Pastures Dairy Co. of Fresno, Calif., stating the dairy was in violation of federal law. "Our inspection and subsequent investigation determined that you distribute unpasteurized milk, buttermilk, butter, cream and colostrums in interstate commerce, in finished form for human consumption," the letter said. While the sale of raw milk products is not illegal, interstate commerce of such products is. To comply with federal law, "OPDC labels and ships its products outside of California for 'pet consumption only,'" the company's Web site says. Last December, FDA said it would begin focusing more inspections on purveyors of raw-milk products.
