This Sunday, natural food stores and eco-conscious individuals alike will celebrate Earth Day. Some will plant a tree, others will engage in activism and still others will work to spread the word about how to live in a more eco-friendly way.
But for these five retailers, efforts center around a local purpose. From enriching local soils to celebrating local ownership, these retailers know that a better Earth begins at home.
An Earth Day party is nothing new for Alfalfa’s, but this year’s bash will be a little different. This weekend, both locations—in Boulder and Louisville—celebrate their new local ownership, and the entire event will center around local. Visitors will enjoy Rocky Mountain Goat Yoga, a bike raffle (one winner each day) and circus acts, as well as free photo booths, chair massages, caricatures, face painting, and live music. Plus, attendees can participate in a bike build with Wish for Wheels, which donates bikes to kids in low income communities.
Every year, Mustard Seed Market & Cafe celebrates its Earth Day birthday with storewide sales and promotions. For 27 of its 37 years, the retailer has also given away free trees to its patrons on Earth Day. So far, more than 750,000 trees have been planted locally, and this year it aims to reach a million.
The Earth Day celebration at Good Harvest Market will feature family-focused activities, a treasure hunt, a cookout and samples galore. But it will also feature a 5 percent across-the-board sale, and a donation of 5 percent of the days’ draw to the Waukesha County Land Conservancy. Shoppers will also have the opportunity to donate their 5 percent discount to the conservancy, to help protect local land.
Tampa Bay knows how to celebrate Earth Day—its yearly EcoFest brings together local businesses, organizations and individuals who are all dedicated to sustainable living. This year, Abby’s Health and Nutrition is joining its ranks by bringing delicious and healthy food items to the local community.
This Earth Day, Deep Roots Market is celebrating with sales, samplings from local vendors, raffles, speakers, games and more. But it’s also educating its shoppers and visitors on how to keep their local soils healthy for future generations. Anyone who visits the store through May 1 is entered in a raffle to receive a composting and gardening kit to care for the soil in their own yard.
