Univar, P&G certify glycerin supply chain

Univar USA Inc. and P&G Chemicals announce that they are able to offer customers a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)-certified domestic supply chain for the packaging and manufacturing of glycerin in the United States. This comes as Univar receives its first GFSI certification against the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Issue 6 for Manufacturing standard for its facility in Bedford Park, Ill., with a Grade A. GFSI certified operations recognize companies and facilities which meet the rigorous quality standards in their operations.

Univar, a leading global chemical distributor, started the process of GFSI certification against the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Issue 6 for Manufacturing earlier this year for key United States branches that supply the food industry throughout the world. Now that Univar has received certification for its facility in Bedford Park, Ill., it will continue the certification process for branches in other key geographic locations with the goal of certification by the end of 2014.

"In receiving the first of our GFSI [recognized audit scheme] certifications using the BRC standard, we continue to advance our capabilities for delivering the high quality products our customers demand," said David Flitman, chief operating officer and president USA and Mexico at Univar. "Through our relationship with P&G Chemicals, we can offer glycerin that is certified using an approved GFSI scheme both at the manufacturing and repackaging stage, offering our customers world-class quality assurance and helping ensure confidence in the delivery of safe food to consumers."

P&G Chemicals has been BRC certified since 2011, and has continuously received a grade A to the BRC standard for its demonstration of compliance to the food safety plans, quality management systems, site standards, product and process control, and personnel. P&G Chemicals maintains the highest quality standards in the production of glycerin globally, including meeting/exceeding USP and Good Manufacturing Practices. P&G Chemicals North America glycerin products include Superol KPO™, Superol NK™ and MOON-OU™.

"P&G Chemicals' Cincinnati Glycerin Refinery remains one of the few sites globally certified to a GFSI audit scheme," said Tom Nelson, director of customer business development at P&G Chemicals. "Through our joint work with Univar, we're continuing to create value for our customers by offering a GFSI approved audit scheme certified supply chain, providing our customers greater confidence in the quality of the product they're receiving."

BRC Global Standards is a leading safety and quality certification program, used by over 20,000 certified suppliers in 90 countries issued through a worldwide network of accredited Certification Bodies. This sets the standardization of quality, safety, and operational criteria, and ensures that manufacturers are compliant to a recognized industry benchmark providing protection for the end consumer. Meeting the BRC Global Standards and other GFSI audit schemes are becoming a fundamental requirement of leading retailers.
