New report calls fermentation the next pillar of alternative proteins

A new report out of the Good Food Institute labels fermentation the third pillar of alternative proteins next to lab-cultured meat and plant-based proteins. In 2020 fermentation-based protein companies raised $435 million of the massive $1.5 billion invested into the alternative protein sector. The report's author notes that a high percentage of these fermentation companies are B2B, as they will develop the necessary components for cell culture as well as ingredients for plant-based products. Read more at The Spoon

 

First Amazon Fresh store opens to public

Amazon's first brick-and-mortar Amazon Fresh Market opened to the public on Sept. 17 in Woodland Hills, California. The model prioritizes good value for food shoppers alongside new technology like the Amazon Dash Cart smart shopping cart and Alexa shopping tools. Read more at Supermarket News

 

Plant-based foods company claims Oklahoma's product label law violated First Amendment to protect meat-industry

A new lawsuit in Oklahoma is challenging the state Legislature's measure that protects the meat industry from plant-based competition. Upton's Naturals and the Plant Based Foods Association argue in the suit that any legislation prohibiting "sellers of plant-based foods from using meat terms to describe their foods unless they have a disclaimer—in the same size and prominence as their product names—that their products are plant based" creates unnecessary confusion for consumers. Read more at Tulsa World

 

Report shows Trump's trade aid favored southern farms

Critics of USDA's bailout payments for U.S. farmers say that the Market Facilitation Program overtly favored larger farms and farms in the South. A new report shows that farmers in Georgia, which happens to be the home state of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue received the highest payments of any state ($42,545 on average). Read more at Modern Farmer
