COPPELL, Texas, Nov 14, 2006 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- As part of its on-going mission to redefine wellness, Mannatech, Incorporated, (MTEX) announced today it has introduced PhytoMatrix, the industry's first supplement containing a unique blend of standardized plant-based minerals, natural vitamin complexes and phytochemicals.
PhytoMatrix distinguishes itself in other ways. Unlike some mass-market supplements, PhytoMatrix contains no synthetic or chemically derived vitamins nor any chelated minerals. All-natural PhytoMatrix is formulated to provide (per daily serving of four caplets) at least 80 percent or more of the U.S. recommended daily values for seven of the 12 minerals it contains and at least 100 percent of the U.S. daily values for the vitamins it contains.

PhytoMatrix was formulated on the premise that nutrients derived from food sources are considered to be the most nutritionally efficacious. With that in mind, Mannatech turned to a bio-friendly technology that allowed it to create a supplement whose food-based vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals are formulated to be readily absorbed by the body.*
Mannatech will make country-specific versions of PhytoMatrix available for sale in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand during the fourth quarter of 2006.
"We designed PhytoMatrix for those who are concerned they are not consuming sufficient levels of vitamins and minerals in their diet," said Sam Caster, the company's founder, CEO and chairman of the board. "Considering many fruits and vegetables are frequently deficient in critical nutrients, few of us are getting the nutritional support from diet alone that we need for optimal health."
According to one study, two peaches supplied the daily value of vitamin A in 1951. The study reported that one would have to consume nearly 53 peaches today to receive the same daily value. A recent ABC News story showed the nutrient value of some fruits and vegetables has declined substantially in recent decades, reportedly because of modern farming practices. The United States Department of Agriculture now recommends up to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
PhytoMatrix offers a full disclosure of ingredients and active sources. By reading the label, consumers can pair the product's active components with the fruit, vegetable or food component from which the ingredient was derived. Without this information, consumers cannot verify that a claim such as "all natural active components" is true. On its label, for example, consumers will see that the vitamin A found in PhytoMatrix comes as mixed carotenoids from the African oil palm fruit.
At the heart of PhytoMatrix is a patented, hydroponic cultivation technology that allows a selected plant to absorb significantly greater quantities of minerals.
The hydroponic process uses Indian mustard sprouts, a plant known as "nature's magnet" for its ability to absorb minerals from the soil. Growing Indian mustard sprouts using enriched hydroponic cultivation can significantly increase the number and amount of minerals concentrated in the plant's tissue.
A study published in the 2000 edition of Food Chemistry magazine reported that Indian mustard sprouts grown using enriched cultivation produced concentrations of iron, zinc and chromium greater than concentrations found in mineral-rich vegetables purchased from a local market. The enriched cultivation used for PhytoMatrix provides optimum quantities of the most essential minerals.
A daily serving of four U.S. PhytoMatrix caplets provides the same amount of minerals typically found in several pounds of some fruits and vegetables. The body uses minerals for many important functions, including the activation of enzymes, hormones and other molecules needed to sustain life.*
In addition to plant-sourced minerals, PhytoMatrix contains all natural vitamin complexes. When derived from the plant matrix, vitamins are bonded to beneficial fibers, sugars and organic acids that reside in natural matrices.
Mannatech has filed for a patent protecting the combination of the key technologies that comprise PhytoMatrix.
"PhytoMatrix is nothing short of revolutionary. It represents a science that far outpaces the decades-old technology used for the majority of supplements on the market today," Caster said.
Founded in 1993, Mannatech is a leading wellness company and a pioneer in the field of proprietary glyconutritional supplements and wellness products. The company announced a ground-breaking formulation in 1996 of a nutritional supplement comprised of a unique blend of plant-based saccahrides, which are also known as glyconutrients ('glyco' is the Greek word for 'sweet').
Medical research acknowledges that certain sugars are needed at the cellular level for optimum cellular function.* Considering that most of these sugars are often lacking in modern diets, Mannatech sought new and better sources of these nutrients. The effort culminated in 1996 with the Ambrotose complex.
Ten years of research, including in vitro studies, animal studies, human case reports and small human clinical studies suggest that Ambrotose provides a wide range of benefits, particularly immune system support.* More than 20 patents worldwide -- including one from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office - - have been issued to Mannatech for technology related to the Ambrotose formulation.
Today Mannatech has more than two dozen glyconutritional products for adults and children that address health and nutrition, sports performance, weight management and skin care.
