Horizon Organic Dairy

Company History
Horizon Organic was founded in 1991 in response to consumer concerns about health issues as well as the growing recognition of long-term negative effects of industrial agriculture on the environment. Horizon Organic introduced organic, fat-free, fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt in 1992 and America's first certified-organic milk in 1993.

In 1999, the company purchased both The Organic Cow of Vermont brand, which is distributed in the eastern United States, and Rachel's Organic in the United Kingdom. Horizon also signed a licensing agreement for co-branding organic yogurt featuring the Happy Cow logo with Takanashi Milk Co. in Japan. In June of 2000, Horizon Organic acquired Meadow Farms, the leading supplier of private label organic milk in the United Kingdom. Horizon Organic Farm and Education Center in Gambrills, Md., opened in November of 2000 at the former site of the historic Naval Academy Dairy. The Horizon Organic Farm and Education Center is one of the most extensive organic learning facilities in the United States.

Horizon Organic purchases organic milk from more than 200 family farms across the country. In addition, the total feed and milk supply purchases help support more than 200,000 acres of organic farmland on 600 family farms.

In 2000, the Council on Economic Priorities awarded Horizon Organic with its prestigious Corporate Conscience Award for Environmental Stewardship for the company's commitment to environmental protection, community relations and global ethics. Horizon Organic also received the 2000 Socially Responsible Business Award at Natural Products Expo East.
