HyPhyto Inc. has announced that its CardioCare® phytosterol for functional foods and beverages has successfully achieved self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status. The process involved an intensive review of safety and toxicology data by an independent panel of qualified scientists with extensive regulatory, pharmacology and toxicological experience.
“Achieving self-affirmed GRAS status for our CardioCare phytosterol assures our customers that they can safely use this unique ingredient to provide the proven benefit of reduction in dietary cholesterol that occurs when plant sterols are consumed,” stated Richard Staack, HyPhyto CEO. “Our novel method of producing dispersible phytosterols allows CardioCare to be easily added to a variety of products including supplement drinks, carbonated and non-carbonated beverages, enhanced waters, energy drinks, tea, coffee and soups without impacting flavor, color or viscosity.
HyPhyto CardioCare sterols contains the same major sterols that are the basis for the FDA health claim: sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol in quantities that exceed the minimum required content.
HyPhyto’s CardioCare phytosterol is manufactured in conformity with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and meets or exceeds all FDA requirements with respect to safety.
