Bergstrom's MSM for exercise recovery study published

Bergstrom's MSM for exercise recovery study published
Small, human proof of concept study supported muscle soreness reduction in a dose dependent manner and a significant increase in TEAC.

Bergstrom Nutrition, producer of OptiMSM®—the world’s only GRAS-designated proprietary and patented MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)—is pleased to announce that its proof of concept (POC) study regarding exercise recovery was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition on Sept. 27, 2012.

Traditionally touted to support overall joint health and mobility, Bergstrom Nutrition recognized a natural progression toward exercise recovery and sports nutrition for MSM. Therefore, a small human POC study was launched, which supported a trend for the reduction in muscle soreness in a dose dependent manner and a significant increase in Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC), the first evidence of its kind.

“MSM supports joint health and more. Beyond serious athletes, MSM can also help those who want to stay in shape, play with the kids and generally be a weekend warrior,” said Tim Hammond, director of sales and strategic relations at Bergstrom Nutrition.

“Beyond our studies, two additional published studies showed strong evidence of efficacy for MSM’s use in exercise recovery and performance. They showed MSM supplementation may have some alleviating effects on lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation while altering the glutathione redox state in favor of increased antioxidant capacity,” said Rod Benjamin, director of technical development at Bergstrom Nutrition. “Results also suggest MSM may decrease muscle damage via promotion of antioxidant capacity, resulting in lower creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase in the MSM treatment group following an acute bout of exercise.”
