Strange bedfellows: Prop 37 drives important conversation

Like most people in the natural products industry, I've been following the debate around Prop 37 in California. In fact it's caused quite a stir all around the country. Everyone seems to be taking a stand for or against and most seem willing to bleed for their position.

I'm more of a centrist, a realist and a political moderate, so I'm not rabid either way. However, I do find the topic of transparency and honesty incredibly important in all things from relationships to politics to marketing—and when you get down to it, all those things are much closer to each other than we may want to believe.

Psychology aside, I find it both distressing and entirely natural that some consumers might call their favorite organic brands to the mat for what their parent companies are doing. Whether or not that's fair is a matter of personal opinion and not my point at the moment.

But in the interest of transparency, I stumbled upon a great infographic created by Dr. Phil Howard at the University of Michigan and shared by The Cornucopia Institute—a 501(c)(3) engaging in "educational activities supporting the ecological principles and economic wisdom underlying sustainable and organic agriculture."

I find it both enlightening to the conversation we're having about Prop 37 and interesting to the larger conundrum of big ag playing a big role in an industry built on small-scale family farms. What do you think?
