SNAC carrier achieves GRAS
New Jersey-based Emisphere Technologies achieved Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status for one of its products, SNAC carrier (Sodium N-\[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) Amino\] Caprylate), the company announced.

The intended use for the product is in combination with nutrients added to food and dietary supplements.

Michael Novinski, Emisphere's president and chief executive officer, said "The publication of our two papers in the International Journal of Toxicology was the final, necessary step in the process of obtaining GRAS status for our SNAC carrier, and we are very pleased to have achieved this goal."

Emisphere is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on a unique and improved delivery of therapeutic molecules or nutritional supplements using its trademarked Eligen Technology. The technology is used to improve the limits of certain molecules' in terms of poor bioavailability, slow on-set of action or variable absorption.

The technology can be applied to the oral route of administration as well other delivery pathways, such as buccal, rectal, inhalation, intra-vaginal or transdermal, the company says.

Pharma Nostra, Embria sign pact
Embria Health Sciences has chosen Pharma Nostra as the exclusive distributor for the company's dietary-supplements ingredients in Brazil. Pharma Nostra will carry EpiCor, an immune-balance ingredient, as well as eXselen, an organic selenium ingredient.

Extracts earn kosher certification
Cactus Botanics' botanical extracts have earned kosher certification by KOF-K, which maintains an international network of regional co-ordinators and rabbinic representatives based in major cities throughout the world.


Partnership for drug development
Danisco BioActives and Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals have signed an agreement for the development of a new biologic drug, which may be used to prevent the disease known as Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). NEC is a rare but life-threatening gastrointestinal disorder in infants, primarily those born either premature or with very low birth weight. The drug, currently labelled STP-206, is a biologic agent composed of live bacteria. Human clinical trials are scheduled to begin in 2009.

Avatar expanding Illinois plant
Avatar Corp has begun implementation of a project to significantly increase its manufacturing capabilities at its University Park, Illinois, location. This includes increasing the production area, doubling boiler capacity and adding a conveyor system. Avatar is a bulk chemical manufacturer specialising in ProKote release agents and lubricants and ProEssential ingredients.

New facility for krill
Israel-based Enzymotec has expanded its krill capacity with a new 200,000sq ft GMP facility. The company is consolidating its production process to meet the growing demand for krill oil worldwide. Recently, the company expanded its product line into a greater variety of krill-based combinations, including krill-based grades, PS/krill combos and a new line of products based on fish sources, set to expand the uses of marine phospholipids.


Free-form lutein granted patents
OmniActive Health Technologies has secured patents in Australia, Canada and Japan for the company's technology for lutein in the free form, from marigold flowers. The patents describe the preparation of xanthophyll crystals containing high content of trans-lutein and specific levels of zeaxanthin to provide standardized levels of free lutein with zeaxanthin, and reducing cis-lutein and other carotenoids to trace amounts. Previously, OmniActive was granted US and Indian patents for this technology.


EPAX's Peru fleet approved
The Austral Group, a sister subsidiary in the Austevoll fisheries group and supplier of omega-3 crude fish oil to EPAX AS, has received approval from Instituto Tecnológico Pesquero del Perú for its fish-oil plants and fishing fleet in Peru for the production of human consumption foodstuff to the European Union. This new EU hygiene directive for crude fish oil took effect May 1 and confirms that EPAX's entire omega-3 fish-oil supply chain is now classified under one EU-compliant quality system.

Barlean's gives to Vitamin Angels
To date, Vitamin Angels has received, and consequently placed with a variety of beneficiary distribution partners, nearly $800,000 in supplements from Barleans. The most recent grant of supplements (approximately $140,000 in value) was given to a small organisation committed to improving the health and survival of children who live outside the reach of assistance programmes worldwide. Vitamin Angels is a nonprofit organisation that provides essential nutrients to infants and children worldwide under the age of five.

Sytrinol earns GRAS status
Proprietary Nutritionals' heart-health ingredient, Sytrinol, has received GRAS approval by an independent expert panel assembled by AIBMR Life Sciences. Sytrinol is a patented and proprietary combination of polymethoxylated flavones and tocotrienols that has been shown in numerous clinical trials to positively affect cardiovascular function.
