Once Again Nut Butter of Nunda, N.Y., hired Robert Gelser as general manager. Gelser has more than 20 years' experience in manufacturing and engineering.

La Grange, Ill.-based Cognis Nutrition & Health hired Wayne Howard, a 20-year veteran in the research, production, sales and marketing of food ingredients, as market development manager for functional food and food technology. Most recently, Howard was Cognis' product manager of food ingredients in Australia.

The International Probiotics Association, based in Chicago, hired a new executive director, Ioannis Misopoulos. Misopoulos was previously international sales manager for the soy foods division of Archer Daniels Midland Co.

Jessica Lundberg, a third-generation Lundberg family member and Lundberg Family Farms' nursery manager and board chairwoman, was selected to attend the 18th class of the USA Rice Federation's Rice Leadership Development Program. The program gives rice industry professionals an understanding of the U.S. rice industry, with an emphasis on personal development and communications training. Lundberg is one of only seven people chosen by a special committee of rice industry and agribusiness leaders to attend the 2007-08 class.

Ann Arbor, Mich.-based NSF appointed David Abney as general manager of the company's dietary supplements and functional foods certification programs. Abney has worked for NSF for eight years, most recently as vice president and general manager of Quality Assurance International, which is owned by NSF International.

Jake Lewin, certification services director for Santa Cruz, Calif.-based California Certified Organic Farmers, was appointed to the Accredited Certifiers Association board. The ACA was formed to provide a forum for U.S. Department of Agriculture-accredited certifiers and to establish constructive relations with organic community members to address challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

Benicia, Calif.-based InterHealth Nutraceuticals appointed Robert Worsena as director of sales, food and beverage. Worsena has more than 20 years' experience in the nutritional supplement, food, beverage and consumer health care industries.

Wayne Silverman, chief administrative officer of the American Botanical Council, will be leaving ABC to take a position as the executive director of Hillels of Georgia, comprised of five centers of Jewish student life at five universities across Georgia. Silverman was with ABC for 12 years.

The Kutztown, Pa.-based nonprofit Rodale Institute appointed Timothy LaSalle as chief executive officer. LaSalle was previously the executive director of the Northwest Earth Institute.

Scientists Gregor Reid, Ph.D., and Andrew Bruce, M.D., won the Metchnikoff Prize for discovering and developing Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14, the most documented probiotic strains for women's health. The researchers were chosen from 31 nominees from 17 countries, in one of three winning categories.
