Another favorite fall food coming into its peak: red grapefruit. It's sweet, easy to eat, incredibly versatile ... what's not to love? I like it straight up, without sugar; but I also love it in salad with avocado and poppy seed dressing, squeezed into holiday punch, and especially in this utterly fantastic recipe for Smoked Trout and Grapefruit Salad (the vanilla-bean dressing is killer). A couple of nights ago, the Black Cat restaurant in Boulder served us an appetizer that featured red grapefruit, butter lettuce, and lobster drizzled with a buttery red-grapefruit sauce -- it was awesome.
