(Silver Spring, MD) -- American Herbal Products Association President Michael McGuffin appeared in two major media outlets on November 19: a letter to the editor in USA Today and a segment on many NBC affiliate stations in evening newscasts.
Both appearances were sparked by media interest in safety concerns about dietary supplements and, specifically, bitter orange (Citrus x aurantium), triggered by a recent mini-review published in the September issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine. When the review was published, AHPA challenged its conclusions that warn that bitter orange dietary supplements pose a risk to consumers. USA Today published a commentary on October 27, which cited the review, and McGuffin’s letter addresses misinformation that it contains (see article below). Coincidently, NBC’s Insider Reports interviewed him about bitter orange. Insider Reports packages interviews and suggests introductory text for local affiliate stations to use during evening news programs. Not all local affiliate stations may have chosen to run the story.
