Body & Soul’s Reincarnation: A New CEO, A New Editor, And A New Look

Watertown, MA -- New Age Publishing, Inc., announces that Janesse Thaw Bruce has joined the company as Chief Executive Officer and Publisher of Body & Soul magazine. “Jan brings a remarkable publishing track record to Body & Soul,” says New Age Publishing Chairman David Thorne, “to ensure that we become the preeminent magazine in the natural-lifestyle world.”

“I have joined the company because I believe no magazine can match its authentic, 28-year heritage in the fields of natural health, personal growth, and well-being,” says Bruce. “This growing market has yet to produce a clear leader. Body & Soul is well-positioned to become that leader.”

Between 1990 and 1995, Bruce led the buyout and turnaround of Walking magazine. At Walking, she teamed up with Editor Seth Bauer to reposition the magazine to attract a female audience, grow the circulation from 350,000 to 600,000, and triple the company’s revenues in four years before engineering a successful sale. On the advertising side, the magazine under Bruce was able to attract some of the biggest brands in the country, including Reebok, Nike, Kraft, and Wyeth.

Body & Soul, she says, is in an even better position to impact the lives of its readers. “In the ’90s,” says Bruce, “women were trying to figure out how to add fitness to their lifestyles. Today smart, creative, busy women have gone way beyond that. They are seeking not only sensible health and fitness but also fresh approaches to leading balanced, fulfilling lives.”

Bruce has most recently been CEO of Integrative Medicine Communications, a company that pioneered the dissemination of science-based information about alternative therapies and their use in conjunction with mainstream medical treatments. “In joining Body & Soul,” she says, “I am combining two of my professional (and personal) passions: healthy-lifestyle magazine publishing and integrative medicine.”

Bruce has begun bringing additional editorial and magazine publishing expertise to the company. Most notably, her former Walking colleague Seth Bauer has joined as Vice President and Editor-in-Chief, and John Stark has been named Deputy Editor. Bauer was most recently at Reader’s Digest, which had purchased Walking in 1998. “Body & Soul will be dedicated to helping readers bring personal growth, balanced well-being, energy, and natural healing into their lives,” Bauer says. “It will be the magazine of internal beauty—a refuge from people’s high-pressure lives.”

Body & Soul was launched as New Age Journal in 1974. It has steadily pioneered important trends and successful techniques in the fields of wellness, holistic living, and spirituality. Renamed Body & Soul in 2002, the magazine will soon release a fresh editorial mandate and a vigorous publishing strategy.
