Health Strategy Consulting Opens Office In Tokyo, Japan

PROVIDENCE, RI and TOKYO, Japan (January 5, 2004) - Health Strategy Consulting, LLC (HSC), a global advisor for business strategy to major food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and nutrition companies, has opened an office in a suburb of Tokyo, Japan. It was announced today by HSC Managing Director Tom Clough.

The new office, known as HSC Japan, will be run by Takeshi Takeda, managing director, with whom HSC has worked with over the past four years. “We have been growing our business within Japan since 2000,” states Mr. Clough, who notes that international business currently represents 65% of HSC’s client portfolio. “This strong growth has created a need to provide more local account management for Japanese companies seeking help in their own markets, as well as understanding markets outside of the country,” states Mr. Clough. “Opening a local office provides a great position to help further non-Japanese clients seeking knowledge of the Japanese market.”

Mr. Takeda brings nearly twenty years of industry experience and an outstanding global network. He has significant knowledge about the industry including technologies, ingredients, regulations, industrial systems, as well as channel and marketing strategies. Previously, Takeda was responsible for business development, new product planning and development, and international business at Sunny Health Co., Ltd of Tokyo, where he started up a new division and established strong global information and sourcing networks. He also focused his attention on business-academia collaboration that aimed to find early stage technologies.

Prior to Sunny Health, Takeshi spent twelve years at Api Co. Ltd. and was involved in various types of business ranging from sales of honey and royal jelly ingredients, the start-up of an operation in China, and developing and marketing channel-specific health foods.

Takeshi received his undergraduate degree in health Science from Azubu University and his MBA from Hosei Business School.

The new HSC Japan office effort was due to collaboration between Clough and Takeda, born from a common view of the market opportunity plus a shared approach in bringing value to clients. According to Takeda, “I am excited to join forces with Tom Clough and HSC. I know from experience that they offer services and capabilities that cannot be matched in this industry. The fact that they produce measurable results for clients is a key differentiator. HSC has established an excellent business foundation with Japan and I will be working hard to build the HSC Japan brand to bring a global perspective to help clients.”

In addition to building relationships with existing clients, HSC Japan will focus on two key initiatives: providing a focused report to Japanese companies on the U.S. contract manufacturing market; and preparation of the Health Strategy Network (HSN) Executive Conference series to be held in Tokyo on May 20-22, 2004.
