Unique Manufacturing Process Effectively Reduces Fish Odor and Taste
CHANNAHON, Ill., July 26, 2002 -- Loders Croklaan Lipid Nutrition, a global leader in lipid-based health ingredients, introduced two marine based Omega-3 fatty acid products, under the Marinol™ brand, to the United States food market at the recent Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting and Food Expo. Available in Europe for two years, Marinol™ C-38 Oil and Marinol™ Powder both offer superior sensory profiles and can be applied to a wide range of products.
The unique process used to manufacture Marinol™ products effectively reduces the fish odor and taste typically associated with Omega-3 fatty acids. Consequently, Marinol™ will not interfere with the sensory profile of even the most difficult applications, including meat, bakery and dairy products.
The Omega-3 fatty acid oil featured in Marinol™ Powder is microencapsulated, which protects against oxidation. Because microencapsulation prevents contact between the coated oil and its environment, premature degradation is also avoided. Additionally, it allows Marinol™ Powder to be dry blended with other ingredients, making it ideal for bread, biscuit and other bakery applications.
Marinol™ C-38 Oil, since it will not interfere with taste profiles, can be added easily to wet sauce formulations, salad dressings, milk and wet soup applications.
“The European market has added Marinol™ products to everything from energy bars to dairy products to processed meats,” said David R. Lewis, business unit manager, North America, for Loders Croklaan. “We expect the U.S. market to adopt those uses plus expand into many new areas such as fruit beverages, dairy drinks, margarine and dairy spreads, cereals, breads and even ice cream.”
Marinol™ brand products have high concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the Omega-3 fatty acids that are known to be responsible for providing health benefits such as stroke prevention and cardiovascular health promotion. Additionally, Marinol™ products are self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe). In addition to its food applications, Loders Croklaan offers Marinol™ products for use in dietary supplements that can carry the FDA-approved label claim for Omega-3 fatty acids.
