Sunsweet Sets its Sights on Driving Category Sales With Prune Juice +

Prune Juice + with lutein meets consumer demand
for products that promise better eye health

(YUBA CITY, Calif.) –Leave it to Sunsweet, the experts in great tasting prune juice, to make a good thing even better. Sunsweet, the number-one worldwide producer and marketer of dried plums, has introduced a new line of lutein fortified prune juice, which contributes to better eye health. Sunsweet Prune Juice + features all the great taste and flavor that consumers have come to expect from Sunsweet, now with the added health benefit of lutein. Prune Juice + is 100% pure Sunsweet Prune Juice fortified with lutein to aid in optimum eye health. Lutein is an antioxidant found in the yellow pigment of dark green leafy vegetables that protects cells against the damaging effect of free radicals-and acts as a defense system for the eyes. A growing body of scientific research has linked lutein consumption to a variety of eye health benefits, including reduction in the incidence of macular degeneration, cataracts and retinal diseases.

“Prune Juice + provides a convenient and healthy option for consumers who prefer nutritious lutein rich foods over supplements, in addition to its other nutritional benefits,” said Howard Nager, Sunsweet’s vice president of North America marketing. "Lutein drives sales in the vitamin category, and we expect similar success in the juice category."

A study conducted by an independent research firm reveals that 91% of eye doctors believe poor nutrition plays a role in the development of common eye diseases. The study by Jefferson Davis Associates, also found that 84% of eye doctors currently recommend lutein to their patients, while 90% of all eye doctors believe consumers should eat foods naturally high in lutein.1 In addition, 84% of health-conscious consumers are interested in buying lutein fortified foods.2 Sunsweet has partnered with Kemin Foods, the makers of FloraGLO® Lutein in developing Prune Juice +. Steve Hanson, director of marketing for Kemin Foods, said Kemin is pleased that Sunsweet will offer one of the first juice products to be fortified with lutein. “Again, Sunsweet demonstrates its experience and leadership by providing a new quality product to health-conscious consumers,” Hanson said.

Sunsweet Prune Juice+ is the only juice on the market that provides 500 mcg of lutein, 3 grams dietary fiber, 10% daily value of iron and 17% daily value of potassium. Prune Juice + will be available on grocery shelves nationwide August 1, 2002.
