Joint health market evolving with consumers

As Baby Boomers age joint health has moved to the forefront of the condition-specific market. We all want healthy knees, hips, and hands well into their retirement years. Key suppliers in this market talk about trends, opportunities, and threats.

Joint health is often grouped with bone health, but the two couldn’t be more different. It would be like grouping eye health with brain health because, after all, they are both so close to one another! We are here to inform you that joint health is an entirely different construct, with utterly different ingredients and mechanisms of action from bone health. The difference is as clear as that between glycosaminoglycans and osteocalcin. Got it? Herewith, the 4-1-1 on joint health.

Fi: What are your projections for the growth of the sector for the coming year?

Heather Thompson, Global Marketing & Communications Manager, Stratum Nutrition

Discomfort in the joints is an ongoing issue due to age, activity, weight, and other factors, so I feel this will always be a growing category. Consumers continue to look for more natural ways to continue daily life activities more comfortably. Worldwide estimates are that 9.6 percent of men and 18 percent of women aged over 60 years have symptomatic osteoarthritis. Eighty percent of those with osteoarthritis will have limitations in movement, and 25 percent cannot perform their major daily activities of life. These numbers continue to rise as the world population becomes more overweight and sedentary. And since participation in sports and other active endeavors is often sporadic, stress and injury to joints is an inevitable consequence. Therefore in the coming year the supplements industry should experience a steady gain in the joint health sector, with a continued interest in new joint health products that are easy to take on a regular basis and that provide measurable benefits to the end consumer.

Paul Dijkstra, CEO, InterHealth Nutraceuticals

The joint health category is constantly growing and introducing new products/ingredients. Innovation continues to be a strong driver in both the dietary supplement and food and beverage industries. It seems the future market is ready for innovation with new ingredients and products that are clinically proven to work and that are safe. Manufacturers want new ingredients that allow them to differentiate their products in the marketplace and re-invigorate the entire category.

Fi: Is the overall aging population a good thing for suppliers of joint health ingredients?

HT: Yes, an aging population is certainly a significant contributing factor to the growing need for joint health solutions. Increasingly more, people desire to be active into middle age and beyond. Ease of movement and joint comfort are integral to an active, healthy lifestyle. But the 21st century senior citizen isn’t just content with being active. These individuals are vibrant and busy in all aspects of their lives. Therefore they desire a supplement regimen that is simple, convenient and easy to maintain.

PD: Joint health is a popular issue among aging Baby Boomers. InterHealth is seeing increased interest in UC-II for joint-health supplements that target the active Boomer—aging cyclists, marathon runners, triathletes, basketball players even the weekend warrior.

Fi: How does your ingredient fit into the overall joint health picture?

HT: NEM is a complete, natural joint health solution comprised of an inherent matrix of glycosaminoglycans including glucosamine, chondroitin, dermatan and keratan sulfate, and hyaluronic acid. NEM also contains collagen and other beneficial proteins and sulfur-containing amino acids.

NEM is an egg-derived ingredient, shown in clinical trials to support joint comfort and flexibility within 7-10 days. Its small 500 mg effective dose allows for greater formulation flexibility and an easy, once-a-day complete joint health solution.

PD: UC-II is a patented, clinically studied ingredient sourced and manufactured in the United States for joint health. UC-II is manufactured in a GMP-certified facility. UC-II is GRAS and is an FDA-notified and published new dietary ingredient (NDI) that supports joint comfort, mobility and flexibility. Having NDI status as well as GRAS status is definitely a key marketing and sales driver for InterHealth.

A big advantage of UC-II is that the dosage is only 40 mg a day. This fact is a distinct benefit for many consumers, especially older individuals who may have difficulty taking larger pills. With compliance being a big factor for efficacy as well as repeat sales, it is important to make the regimen as convenient as possible for consumers. Furthermore, a product that combines UC-II with other joint health ingredients will still result in a manageable supplement size. Manufacturers who choose to formulate with UC-II will not only be able to take advantage of the small 40 mg dosage, but will benefit from the published peer-reviewed research demonstrating that UC-II is twice as effective as glucosamine and chondroitin.
