Debra Bass Named Government Relations Counsel for Nutrition 21

ROCKVILLE, Md, July 12, 2005 – Nutrition 21, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXXI), the leading developer and marketer of chromium-based nutritional supplements, named Debra Bass, JD, LLM as its Government Relations Counsel. As in-house lobbyist and advisor for the company, Bass will direct all federal and state relations from the company’s Rockville office.

Bass was most recently a partner at the firm of Martinez Bass & Associates, a health policy, regulatory affairs and government relations firm. Her areas of expertise include healthcare law, dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, foods, drugs, devices and cosmetics regulations. Her achievements include leadership in obtaining the first U.S. Department of Health and Human Services exception to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) coding regulations that allow a demonstration project for the use of alternative billing codes for healthcare transactions; and securing a $500,000 appropriation for The Healthy Foundation, a nonprofit group that operates a vitamin distribution program for children.

Bass received her Master of Laws in Law and Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, and has more than ten years of experience serving as counsel to the natural products industry, private healthcare practitioners and insurers, and consumers. She also developed and teaches the legal curriculum of the Associate Fellowship Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.
