NOW achieves GRAS no objection letter status for STEVIA FSE

NOW Health Group was issued a No Objection letter from the US Food and Drug Administration regarding the determination that the company’s HealthCo Division’s STEVIA FSE is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS).

NOW Health Group was issued a “No Objection” letter from the US Food and Drug Administration regarding the determination that the company’s HealthCo Division’s natural sweetener, STEVIA FSE™, is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS).

STEVIA FSE™ has been self-affirmed GRAS since May 2010 following a comprehensive review of chemistry, safety and toxicology data by an independent panel of scientists.

STEVIA FSE, a unique, and significantly better tasting sweetener, is enzyme treated to provide a better-rounded sweetening profile ideal for a variety of food and beverage applications. Stevia FSE is extracted from the whole Stevia leaf and is not an isolated fraction, like Reb A, which may require additional added substances to mask the bitter aftertaste. No flavorings or masking agents are needed in Stevia FSE. The natural enzyme treatment enhances its organoleptic (sensory) properties. NOP Certified Organic and Kosher, Stevia FSE is 60-100 times sweeter than sugar (sucrose).

“We have a long history of offering high quality and great tasting natural sweeteners,” said Michael Lelah, Ph.D., Technical Director. “Given the strong consumer acceptance of our Stevia, this additional GRAS status clears the way for expanded use in food and beverage products.”

Utilizing the platform of “general purpose non-nutritive sweetener for foods and beverages,” GRAS status allows manufacturers to add Stevia FSE in a variety of foods and beverages ranging from baked goods to milk products, breakfast cereals, cheese, egg products, processed vegetables, soft candy, soups, snack foods, non-alcoholic beverages, imitation dairy products, hard candy, chewing gum, granulated sugar, and seasonings and flavors.

Healthco sells STEVIA FSE as a food ingredient as bulk powder, in private label consumer sizes, and food-service bulk packets.
