Northern California organic beverage makers “clean-up” at the 2003 WRAP Awards
San Francisco, CA – Organic food companies are leading the way to protect the California environment, according to the recently announced Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) of the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
Each year WRAP recognizes businesses for outstanding efforts in reducing waste. This year honorees include Thanksgiving Coffee Company (Ft. Bragg,
CA) and Straus Family Creamery (Marshall, CA).
Widely recognized as an industry leader for their social and environmental programs abroad, Thanksgiving Coffee is a three-time WRAP winner. Their efforts include reducing propane and energy usage while increasing recycling, composting of all organic waste, and the implementation of more energy efficient roasters, light bulbs, and ballasts.
Thanksgiving introduced California’s first 100% biodiesel delivery fleet and partnered with Trees for the Future, an innovative program that planted more than 75,000 trees in Ethiopia to offset the carbon emissions produced in Thanksgiving’s day-to-day operations.
Straus Family Creamery, the first organic dairy west of the Mississippi, has won a WRAP award every year since 1995. Straus sells milk in reusable, deposit glass bottles which has kept over 6.1 million tons of waste out of landfills. In addition, the Creamery has been a leading force in preserving the historic dairy lands of western Marin County while serving as a model for organic farmers nationwide.
Other organic food companies recognized by WRAP include Whole Foods Market, Petaluma Poultry and EcoExpress Gifts.
