TOYAMA, Japan – Fuji Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. headed by President & CEO, Mitsunori Nishida announces its acquisition of the Swedish natural astaxanthin manufacturer, BioProcess AB.
On September 1, 2003, the acquired company commenced operations under the new name, AstaReal AB and is headed by Kazuyuki Miyakawa, also the President of the wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji, Micro Gaia, Inc. based in Maui, Hawaii. Micro Gaia will change its name to BioReal to strike a common image for Fuji's global presence within the natural astaxanthin market that also includes Fuji's Japanese based subsidiary in Tokyo by the name of NatuReal.
BioProcess, formerly known as AstaCarotene AB, uses a closed, indoor-tank production system to produce natural astaxanthin biomass from the micro algae, Haematococcus pluvialis. The production of Haematococcus pluvialis is quite sensitive to climatic conditions so that a closed system allows for a more consistent level of production. Micro Gaia, uses a closed outdoor method of production known as the Bio-Dome System. The combination of both facilities makes Fuji a global leader in natural astaxanthin production.
The acquisition significantly adds to Fuji’s base of intellectual property as BioProcess owned the largest number of patents relating to astaxanthin in human and animal health to include such areas as muscle endurance, fertility and stomach health. Although BioProcess will continue to focus sales of its bulk and nutraceutical retail products within the European market, Fuji plans a coordinated program to market astaxanthin based functional and branded products throughout global nutraceutical and cosmetic markets.
Fuji Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. was established in 1946 and is well known in the Japanese market as a producer of high quality organic and inorganic bulk pharmaceutical products. Since the establishment of Micro Gaia (2000) and Natureal (2001), Fuji leads the Japanese market in total sales revenue of astaxanthin bulk powders and oils for the nutraceutical and cosmetic markets.
